Riverwork 

The images in Riverwork are all digital photographs altered with an algorithm that breaks down the structure and photographic veracity of the image for expressionist effect: as a metaphor for the tragic events unfolding in the global environment. No paint was applied either digitally or directly to the paper after printing. The painterly nuances apparent in the work were unintentional. With a few exceptions, all images were made in or around the Los Angeles River in Downtown Los Angeles.

Linear City : Los Angeles River

With a Faculty Assistance Grant from the Art Center College of Design, this Los Angeles River portion of the Linear City Project was completed in 2004 in a single helicopter flight from the source of the river to its mouth in Long Beach, photographing at key locations or where changes occur in the channel or the landscape surrounding it. Preceding Google Earth by several years, there was a need to simply see the river in its urban context with a clear orderly unfolding of its path. The helicopter was held at a consistent altitude and the camera at a consistent point of view to lend structure and serial clarity to the images. Included here are 20 of the 52 total images. All the images may be seen online at the website for the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.
